Angels at Breakfast
I’ve had a wonderful week at the Blue Ridge Christian Writer’ Conference in Black Mountain, NC. We’ve enjoyed classes, worship, inspirational keynote speakers, and fellowship. The food is exceptional and each morning we grab a tray, go through the cafeteria line, and find a table with some of our fellow Blue Ridge Conference students to enjoy the meal. Because we don’t know each other, we always ask two questions (after introducing ourselves): Where are you from and what do you write.
Today, when I shared I had written a book about angels, one of the ladies at the table said, “I have an angel story for you.”
“Please tell me, “ I said.
“My husband was experiencing excruciating pain in his leg,” she began. “It finally got so bad, I knew I needed to take him to the hospital emergency room. I had hesitated because the hospital is two hours from where we live. By the time we got there it was late in the evening. I was exhauted and could barely keep my eyes open, but I was not about to leave my husband unattended. About that time, a nurse came up to me, patted my hand and said, ‘Honey, you go get some sleep. I will stay with your husband all night and make sure he has everything he needs.’
“My husband was admitted to the hospital, and treated for the leg pain that had immobilized him. When he was released, he wanted to go to the hospital gift shop and get a thank you card for the nurse who had been so kind to him that first night of his stay.
“We signed the card and took it to the nurses’s station on his floor to give to his favorite nurse. When we told the nurses there who we were looking for, they told us there was no one there by that name. When we described her, they said there was no one there who met that description. That’s when we knew she had been an angel.”
Following that story, another lady at the table shared an angel story about a severe snow storm when cars were stranded on the interstate and no one could move. Her friend decided to get out and walk, but he hadn’t gone far before he lost his way in the snow. All of a sudden a man came up along side of him and asked him where he was going. “That’s where I”m going, too,” said the stranger. “I’ll walk with you.”
The kind stranger knew the way even though the friend had lost his way. When the friend got to his house and opened the door, he turned to thank his companion, but no one was there. “My friend knew he had been accompanied by an angel,” said the lady at our table.
We heard one more angel story before we finished our breakfast. Three angel stories at breakfast.
Thank you, Lord, for the ministry of angels. They are with us morning, noon, and night. “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and he delivers them.” Psalm 34:7.”
