Angelic Protection
How many times have you felt the need for supernatural protection for yourself or loved ones?
Whether we are concerned about a child with a brand new driver’s license, the weather report of a level four of five hurricane headed our way, or a deadly, highly contagious virus breaking out in our community, we need protection.
We need protection from all kinds of dangers: things people can do to us (rob, steal, kill, for example), diseases, spiritual attacks, and natural disasters.
When we pray Psalm 91, God’s supernatural protective shield covers us. The Psalm (verses 9-11) promises: “Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”
Think about that. God will command His angels to come and protect us. And how can those angels help?
From God’s Word, we know the angels have incredible strength. An angel moved the stone away form Jesus grave (which scholars tell us weighed about 3,000 pounds);
2. When God orders, angels have control over diseases. When King Hezekiah was threatened by an enemy army which encamped his city, an angel of the Lord came and wiped out 185,000 of the enemy troops in one night. I suspect the angel accomplished this feat by germ warfare. (2 Kings 19:35-36);
3. Angels can change the minds of those who would physically do us harm. Psalm 34:4 says “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them.” One story of such deliverance involved a teenage girl riding home on a bus at night. She felt uncomfortable because a man on the bus kept looking at her. When she got off the bus, the man got off. To her surprise, a large dog she had never seen before came up to her and started walking with her. When the girl turned around to see where this man was, she saw him going in the other direction. Once home, she patted the dog and went to get him a treat. When she returned, the dog was gone. She never saw him again. Story from Angels Among Us,
Angels can take any form needed, animals included. There is no limit to the ways God uses them to protect us. Psalm 91 has a long and storied history of protecting those in harm’s way from every conceivable type of harm. I read that a German physician in the 14th Century said that Psalm 91 was the best protection he had against the bubonic plague and cholera. (Kidd, Thomas, “The Pestilence that Walketh in Darkness: Spurgeon on Psalm 91,” www.thegospelcoalition.org, April 13, 2020).
Why take chances? I pray it every day over my extended family and friends. It’s God’s insurance plan for His children.
