A Beautiful Rainbow

This year I went with my family to Hawaii for Christmas. We were greeted by a beautiful rainbow, on Oahu, as we drove from the airport to our hotel. I have seen many rainbows, but this is the only rainbow I can remember that went from horizon to horizon, a full rainbow. Only a small cloud interrupted the flow of the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet ribbons.

Before I left, I prayed for God to make his presence known on our trip. Here he was, reminding me in the rainbow of his covenant promise to Noah, when he promised to put His bow in the sky as a sign he would never again destroy the earth by water.

The covenant with Noah pointed me to His covenant with us through Jesus Christ. Even as God has never broken His covenant with Noah, He will never break His covenant with those who belong to him through His son. When Jesus shared his last meal with his disciples, he broke the bread and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And he did the same with the cup saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” (Luke 22:19-20).

The new covenant sealed with the blood of God’s only son is the best news the world has ever received. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:2). Even as the rainbow whispered to me that God is faithful, the communion cup convicts me of the promise that seals my destiny, eternal life through Jesus Christ. That’s a promise I can take into the new year with confidence and. joy.
